We have characterized the spectroscopic properties of one of the first samp
les of blue-emitting diode lasers based on GaN. With such a laser diode ope
rated inside a standard extended cavity arrangement we find a mode-hop free
tuning range of more than 20 GHz and a linewidth of 10 MHz. Doppler-free s
pectroscopy on an indium atomic beam reveals the isotope shift between the
two major indium isotopes as well as efficient optical pumping.
