Abstract
The concept of self-organized criticality evolved from studies of three sim ple cellular-automata models: the forest-fire, slider-block, and sandpile m odels. Each model is associated with natural hazards, which have frequency- size statistics that are well approximated by power-law distributions. Thes e distributions have important implications for probabilistic hazard assess ments.
