Abstract
Two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography have become the major modaliti es for the assessment of mitral regurgitation. The combined use of these te chniques provides information regarding the morphology of the valvular appa ratus as well as the severity of regurgitation. Transesophageal and three-d imensional echocardiography provide a more-detailed evaluation of valve mor phology, which can be valuable in determining suitability for valve repair. lit patients with severe mitral regurgitation, Echocardiographic assessmen t of ventricular size and function plays a critical role in. determining th e optimal timing of surgery.
