Abstract
Delirium is a medical emergency and is the manifestation of many entities. A confusion-assessment method score and the mini-mental status examination may be helpful in making the diagnosis. In most cases, focused history taki ng and physical examination and selected laboratory testing unmask the caus e. Emergency management includes control of agitated or aggressive behavior with pharmacologic agents or physical restraints, support measures, and di rected treatment of the underlying cause. Delirious patients whose symptoms do not resolve fully in the emergency department must be admitted.
