Sa. Washburn et al., 17-ALPHA-DIHYDROEQUILENIN INCREASES HIPPOCAMPAL DENDRITIC SPINE DENSITY OF OVARIECTOMIZED RATS, Brain research, 758(1-2), 1997, pp. 241-244
The effects of estradiol and 17 alpha-dihydroequilenin on the apical d
endrite spine density of pyramidal cells of the CA1 region of rat hipp
ocampus were compared. 17 alpha-Dihydroequilenin was as effective as e
stradiol in increasing spine densities relative to controls. 17 alpha-
Dihydroequilenin is not uterotrophic like estradiol but does have bene
ficial effects on the cardiovascular system, suggesting that it may be
an effective single-agent hormone replacement therapy to treat menopa
usal symptoms and reduce chronic disease risk in menopausal women.
