Karyotype of African bariliine fish Raiamas steindachneri (Osteichthyes, Cyprinidae)

The karyotype of Raiamas steindachneri was analyzed by Giemsa staining and sequential silver-staining. The diploid chromosome number was 2n = 50 (8 pa irs of metacentric, 15 submetacentric and 2 pairs of subtelocentric chromos omes). The nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were situated in the telomeri c region of shorter arms of one submetacentric pair, Very probably No. 12 i n size. This first report for any of the African non-cyprinine cyprinid fis hes stresses the need of other karyotypic data to reveal cytotaxonomic rela tionships of both African and Asian bariliine cyprinids.
