Valproic acid is an antiepileptic drug in widespread use. The possibil
ity of various hematologic side effects with this drug is well recogni
zed, We describe a breastfed infant with thrombocytopenic purpura, ane
mia, and reticulocytosis, whose mother was treated with valproic acid.
As the mother stopped breast-feeding, the infant recovered.
