The author emphasises that the relationship of social science to social wor
k is umbilical or to put it differently, social work is applied social scie
nces. Applied syllabus can be prepared realistically and taught effectively
only by the teachers having direct exposure to socioeconomic problems in t
he field. Multidisciplinary. separate and parallel teaching is not enough;
it must be integrated into an interdisciplinary approach. Scientific social
research should be regarded as essentially useful for diagnosis and estima
tion of the dimensions of the social problems, as a database for planning s
ocial programmes and for evaluation of social welfare services.
