Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae lacks most of the biosynthetic enzymes for hemin syn thesis. However, the organism has retained ferrochelatase activity, which w e identified to be encoded by a hemN-homologous gene. In this report we cha racterize the growth physiology conferred by hemN mutations under infection and laboratory conditions.
