Abstract
The Instructional Management Systems (IMS) project is developing a set of s pecifications for learning technologies, with the intention of removing obs tacles to their large-scale uptake. In the UK, the Joint Universities' Fund ing Councils' Information Systems Committee has joined the project as an in vestment member and has established a UK IMS Centre. IMS is collaborating w ith other projects active in this area. The IMS specification has several c omponents, each of which is described.
