Abstract
Master Jehan Yperman, a medieval surgeon, observed that when the optic nerv
e is injured, the eye becomes blind and beautiful. This is an attempt to tr
ace the footsteps of this forgotten surgeon and to track the history of the
cosmetic use of the belladonna herb, as well as the concept of amaurotic m
ydriasis.
