Ec. Fagan-pryor et Dl. May, Establishment of interrater reliability for a nursing Extrapyramidal Side Effects (EPS) assessment scale, J NURS C Q, 14(3), 2000, pp. 54-63
Many patients who receive antipsychotic medications experience dystonia, ak
inesia, dyskinesia, and akathisia, collectively called Extrapyramidal Sympt
om Side Effects (EPS). The purpose of this study was to establish interrate
r reliability for a Nursing EPS Assessment Scale developed to focus on all
four symptom areas. Twenty RNs and 12 patients participated in the instrume
nt development studies. After several revisions, interrater reliability sig
nificance was demonstrated at the 0.01 level. It was concluded that the Nur
sing EPS Assessment Scale possessed good interrater reliability for nursing
assessment of EPS.
