Abstract
Bariatric surgery (surgery for obesity) is a viable and effective option fo r patients with morbid obesity. Currently accepted operations include verti cal banded gastroplasty, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and other partial malabs orptive procedures for the superobese patient. These operations generally w ork by restricting volume able to be ingested at any one meal by inducing e arly satiety and establishing a partial selective fat malabsorption. Expect ed results should be loss of 50% or greater of excess body weight and decre ases in weight-related comorbidities.
