The influence of lattice expansion caused by the substitution of Ni for Co
and La for Ce on the electrical resistivity, heat-capacity and magnetic sus
ceptibility behavior (above 1.5 K) of the new mixed-valent compound, Ce2CoS
i3, are investigated by studying the ternary series Ce2-x.LaxCoSi3 and Ce2C
o1-yNiySi3. On the basis of data, it is inferred that the electronic struct
ure variations play a dominant role as compared to the chemical pressure ef
fects in determining the strength of the Kondo effect in these alloys. Some
of the alloys in these solid solutions may provide an opportunity to under
stand non-Fermi-liquid phenomena. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights
