Results from a comparative study of simulations and experiments on plasma p
rofiles and anomalous transport in a simple, magnetised plasma torus is pre
sented. Under typical operating conditions the cross-field discharge curren
t is classical and determines a hollow potential profile. The particle tran
sport is always anomalous and mediated by electrostatic flute-mode turbulen
ce. There is a universal critical density scale length for onset of the int
erchange instability The average density gradient is slightly subcritical,
and the power spectra of the potential fluctuations have approximately a li
f dependence. These features are characteristic for systems exhibiting self
-organized critical behaviour.
