Stationary properties of high intensity wave beams in weakly inhomogeneous
media with a saturable nonlinearity are investigated by means of a consiste
nt asymptotic method It is shown that the strongest effects of the nonlinea
rity are most important within a certain range of the medium parameters and
explicit formulas for the beam intensity and the beam phase velocity are o
btained in this range. The existence of bistable beam states is also discus
sed.
