Recurrent cytomegalovirus infection during pregnancy is considered less dan
gerous for the fetus than primary infection. We present a case of severe fe
tal cytomegalic inclusion disease after maternal reactivation of cytomegalo
virus during the first trimester of pregnancy. The possibility of such feta
l injury is an argument for prenatal diagnosis in seropositive pregnant wom
en when ultrasonographic findings suggest cytomegalovirus infection. Copyri
