Forty-two species of moray eels are found in the Hawaiian Islands; 40 speci
es are described and illustrated, including two new species (two undescribe
d species of Anarchias will be treated later by other authors). Type specim
ens of most nominal species have been re-examined, holotypes located (espec
ially for Bleeker species), and lectotypes designated for five species; upd
ated synonymies are listed, and explanatory notes are given. Valid species
and their synonyms are summarized in tabular format. The morays of Hawaii i
