Abstract
Gradient comparison theorems are proved for positive bounded harmonic funct ions and positive eigenfunctions on complete Riemannian manifolds with Ricc i curvature bounded below. A characterization of the manifolds supporting e xtremal bounded harmonic or positive eigenfunctions is also given.
