This paper describes the concept of zeta potential, as well as the methods
to perform such measurement. After presenting the origin of the electrical
double-layer and relating the potentials associated to it, the physical bas
es of the zeta potential determination are described. A special interest is
made in the Doppler microelectrophoresis and in the electroacoustic determ
ination. Finally, the more important applications of the measurement of the
zeta potential in the field of the colloidal chemistry are pointed out.
