Abstract
A brief review is presented of our current understanding of the chemical ev olution of the Milky Way and, in particular, of the solar neighbourhood and the disc of our Galaxy, in the light of recent theoretical and observation al results. We explore the implications of this understanding for studies o f 'cosmic chemical evolution'.
