D. Ohlmeier, Indication and contra-indication in group-analytic therapy - a contribution from a theoretical and clinical standpoint, GRUPPENPSYC, 36(1), 2000, pp. 3-19
More than once various practical necessities and constraints lead to therap
ists not making a specific indication for analytical group therapy. Such a
procedure, however, also bears dangers for individual patients and justice
is not done to the specificity of the psychoanalytica group method. The ind
ication is made under the aspect of the group as a whole and under the furt
her aspect of the individual diagnosis, The issue of the group members bein
g homogen or heterogen plays a special role. Contra-indication is made espe
cially for patients with early disorders who can be treated better in "spec
ific" groups as shown with several examples. Finally, attention is also pai
d to the therapist's personality, especially regarding narcisstic conflicts
which can make handing transference and countertransference difficult.
