A study of magnetic and structural properties of (CoxFe100-x)(50) (0 less t
han or equal to x less than or equal to 100) alloy thin films as functions
of composition and substrate deposition-temperature T-s is carried out. The
intrinsic perpendicular magnetic anisotropy K-u starts to increase with de
position temperature T-s for all the films (0 less than or equal to x less
than or equal to 100) at about T-S=250-300 degrees C, and then becomes near
ly constant. The maximum values of K-u at room temperature thus obtained ar
e 6x10(7), 4x10(7), and 2x10(7) erg/cc for Fe50Pt50, (Co43Fe57)(50)Pt-50 an
d Co50Pt50, respectively. Also, the K-u of Fe50Pt50 films increases with th
e order parameter (S), being closely related with the tetragonality c/a. Th
ese results indicate that the evolution of K-u is due to the occurrence of
the ordered fct phase. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(
