Abstract
We have measured the magnetization of in-plane magnetized ultrathin magneti c dots of Co on Cu(100) as a function of temperature and applied field by s canning Kerr microscopy. Co dots with lateral sizes down to 4 mu m and a th ickness of 1.8 atomic layers show a sharp magnetic phase transition which i s indistinguishable from the one of extended films. The scaling plot sugges ts that these small particles belong to the Ising universality class. (C) 2 000 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(00)36808-6].
