Abstract
Recent research has identified characteristic differences between the phone tic structures of names and of ordinary nouns, with particularly distinctiv e patterns being exhibited by feminine personal names. No explanation has y et been found. This paper suggests that the solution lies not in the Englis h sound system, as has previously been assumed, but in differences between the linguistic origins of the various types of material.
