D-C electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of poly(2-methoxy-5-dodecyloxy-p-ph
eynylenevinylene) was observed for the film immersed in an electrolyti
c solution and for its dry composite film with a solid polymer electro
lyte using interdigitated gold electrodes spaced 5 mu m apart. The coi
ncidence of the onset voltages and spectra of tile ECL suggests that b
oth ECLs can be interpreted by the same mechanism: negatively and posi
tively charged excited species of the polymer are formed at the cathod
e and anode, respectively, and recombine between the electrodes to for
m singlet excitons which radiatively relax to the sound state.
