The objective of this study was to find out the effect of a selected coatin
g material (liquid nitrile butadiene rubber) on antiozonant diffusion in a
natural rubber substrate. The antiozonant used was N-isopropyl-N'-phenyl-p-
phenylenedi- amine (IPPD). The study demonstrates a comparison of compatibi
lity between IPPD in natural rubber and IPPD in nitrile butadiene rubber. D
ue to the polarity of nitrile butadiene rubber and the non-polar nature of
natural rubber, initial results from the study showed that diffusion of IPP
D in natural rubber is easier than diffusion of the same in nitrile butadie
ne rubber. In both cases however, the amount of accumulated bloom on the su
bstrate surface was a measure of compatibility between the elastomers and t
he antiozonant.
