Fields scattered by a lossy dielectric wedge for a plane-wave incidence are
calculated. Reflected and refracted fields are obtained by inhomogeneous p
lane-wave tracing in a lossy medium, while the edge-diffracted fields of th
e physical-optics approximation are accurately corrected by adding the mult
ipole line sources at the edge of the wedge to satisfy the extinction theor
em. This solution provides accurate numerical results for the scattered fie
lds when the loss tangent of the wedge medium is less than about 10, which
is guaranteed by the smallness of the extinction integral. (C) 2000 John Wi
