The effect of calcium substitution by gadolinium on the superconducting pha
ses formation in BSCCO-type compounds is studied by X-ray diffraction and a
c susceptibility measurements on the undoped and Gd-doped Bi1.8Pb0.2Sr2CaCu
2Oz and Bi1.8Pb0.2Sr2Ca2Cu3Oz systems. The addition of gadolinium to the sa
mples favors the 2212 phase formation in both 2212 and 2223 starting compos
itions. It is suggested that a correlation exists between the stabilization
effect of gadolinium on the 2212 phase formation and the Gd3+ coordination
in oxide compounds.
