Abstract
It is shown that elementary quantum mechanical considerations determine whe ther the resistive features of a closed electric circuit are governed by th e well-known Landauer-Buttiker conductance formula. In particular, it is ar gued that the latter results from the interplay between the topology of the transport electric field and the quantization of the magnetic flux trapped by the circuit.
