An overview of progress in string theory

There has been many interesting developments in string theory in last coupl e of years. The purpose of this article is to present a brief account of th e progress made in string theory. The two invited talks by S R Das and S Mu khi in this volume contain more detailed accounts of our understanding of b lack hole physics and the intimate connections between string theory and ga uge theories.
