Abstract
Survey data from Baoding, China, show that the child's life-course location affects the likelihood of residing with a parent. When parents and grown c hildren co-reside, the child's progress toward full adulthood increases the likelihood that the generations will budget separately. Marriage is the mo st significant marker of adulthood, but its effects differ for sons and dau ghters.
