The status of technological and scientific skill attainment by American Ind
ian individuals and the science-and technology-related issues faced by Indi
an communities and cultures are outlined. The potential for unique Indian c
ontributions to science as well as the potential for scientific contributio
ns to Indian well-being are described. Factors that have contributed to sci
ence/technology problems and impeded science/technology successes among Ind
ians are reviewed. Some recent Indian science/technology projects that prov
ide model examples of what can work are reviewed.
