Ga. Kolbasov, A new species of the genus Lithoglyptes (Cirripedia, Acrothoracica, Lithoglyptidae) offshore Island Nauru (Micronesia), ZOOL ZH, 79(3), 2000, pp. 372-376
A new species of burrowing barnacles Lithoglyptides echinoideus was found i
n the hydrocoral Distichopora sp. offshore Island Nauru (around 00.degrees
30' S, 166 degrees 55' E) at a depth of 19-20 m. This species possesses fou
r terminal cirri and caudal appendages like other species of the genus Lith
oglyptes. Its opecular bars bear conspicuous conical opercular projections
with longitudinal rows of curved teeth, the lateral bars are absent, the or
ificial knob is smooth and not armed with spines and setae, the caudal appe
ndages are two-joined, second and third mandibular teeth differ only slight
ly from denticles of the lower part of blade. L. echinoideus differs from o
ther Lithoglyptes species in having several well-developed longitudinal row
s of curved teeth of opercular projections and in reduced sizes of the seco
nd and third mandibular teeth. It also differs from L. mitis Tomlinson and
L. habei Tomlinson in the absence of armament of the orificial knob area.
