Sz. Zhang et al., Adult herpetic laryngitis with concurrent candidal infection - A case report and literature review, ARCH OTOLAR, 126(5), 2000, pp. 672-674
Rarely, adult herpetic laryngitis without involvement of the oropharynx has
been reported. However, to our knowledge, laryngitis caused by herpes simp
lex virus with coexisting Candida albicans has not been reported. We report
what we believe to be the first case of localized herpetic laryngitis supe
rimposed by laryngeal Candida species infection in an immunosuppressed pati
ent. This diagnosis was made on the basis of the findings of a laryngeal mu
cosal biopsy and ancillary testing using fungal stains and immunohistochemi
cal stains for herpetic antigens. We also review the literature and discuss
the clinical and diagnostic presentations, including potential pitfalls in
the diagnosis.
