S. Mayama, EUNOTIA-VALIDA AND EUNOTIA-PSEUDOVALIDA SPEC-NOV (BACILLARIOPHYCEAE) - ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE VALVE AND GIRDLE, Nova Hedwigia, 65(1-4), 1997, pp. 165-176
Between Eunotia glacialis and E. valida remain unsolved taxonomical pr
oblems because of their resemblance. The type material of the latter a
nd several Japanese specimens similar to E. valida were examined in de
tail. Areola density, location of polar raphe endings and apical areol
ation/striation were useful characteristics for differentiating these
species. E. pseudovalida spec. nov. is described as a diatom with tran
sapical narrow ditches located in the inner valve surface and girdle b
ands which change widths prominently near both apices.
