Abstract
Between Eunotia glacialis and E. valida remain unsolved taxonomical pr oblems because of their resemblance. The type material of the latter a nd several Japanese specimens similar to E. valida were examined in de tail. Areola density, location of polar raphe endings and apical areol ation/striation were useful characteristics for differentiating these species. E. pseudovalida spec. nov. is described as a diatom with tran sapical narrow ditches located in the inner valve surface and girdle b ands which change widths prominently near both apices.
