A specimen of Lithodoras dorsalis (Valenciennes in Cuvier et Valenciennes,
1840) was recently caught in an estuary of French Guiana. It is the first u
nquestionable capture of the species in this area, although the type descri
bed by Valenciennes was reported from Cayenne. Since the description, no ot
her specimen had been collected in French Guiana. The genus and the species
are mainly known from the Amazonian basin. This capture allows to validate
the type locality. However, the presence of this species in French Guiana
would be due to individuals. The specimen caught by Humboldt (MNHN 4156) is
designated as the name-bearing paratype.
