We examined the antitumor effect of administering ubenimex, a biological re
sponse modifier, in combination with chemotherapy (cisplatin and vindesine)
and radiotherapy by local irradiation on human lung squamous cell carcinom
a (LC-1 strain) in nude mice. Ubenimex (Bestatin(R)) increased tumor growth
-inhibition activity and also delayed tumor regrowth when combined with rad
iation and with chemotherapy and radiation. The combined therapy significan
tly inhibited tumor growth when the tumor was small at the onset of treatme
nt. Ubenimex rescued natural killer cell activity to a normal level after c
hemotherapy and radiation. These results strongly support the importance of
multidisciplinary combinations with ubenimex in clinical use.
