Er3+ is an important optical constituent due to its sharp emission line at
1.55 mu m Coupling Er3+ ions with light presents a challenging problem sinc
e its emission originates from an internal f-shell transition. We studied E
r3+ in Si/SiO2 microcavities in order to increase the light-matter interact
ion. Two different structures were studied differing by their degree of lig
ht confinement and Er3+ concentration. In a weak light confining microcavit
y, we find a large enhancement of the luminescence. In the case of a strong
light confining Si/SiO2 microcavity we observed a spectral splitting of 0.
