The luminescence quantum efficiency of different laser transitions in rare-
earth-doped lithium niobate is determined from photoacoustic and luminescen
ce excitation signals. High quantum efficiencies have been obtained for the
transitions relevant for optical applications of the different ions (Nd3+,
Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+). Evidence of site dependent quantum efficiency and up
-conversion effects are also demonstrated in Yb3+/Mg2+ and Er3+/Yb3+ co-dop
