This article reviews psychologic interventions in the treatment of acute pa
in, using pediatric procedures as a framework. Cognitive and behavioral str
ategies and packages that combine cognitive and behavioral techniques are r
eviewed. For each strategy, the authors provide a description of the treatm
ent procedure and goals then review empiric evidence for that treatment's e
fficacy. They also provide a brief estimate of its feasibility (amount of t
ime and cost). In addition, this article also describes psychologic factors
that influence pain experiences in children.
