The prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors are an integral component in the man
agement of mild to moderate acute pain processes. Agents in this class incl
ude acetaminophen, the salicylates, and the many nonsteroidal anti-inflamma
tory agents. This article discusses the applications of these agents in the
management of acute pain, options in regard to the agent, route of adminis
tration, mode of administration, and their adverse effect profile.
