The coupled-wave method is used to obtain the exact solution of the wa
ve equations describing the propagation of optical radiation in an act
ive distributed-feedback structure based on a phase grating with a lin
early chirped period. The normal mode spectrum and the threshold gain
are found for an active distributed-feedback structure with aperiodic
modulation of the refractive index.
