Surface melting of an n-alkane crystallite

Melting and recrystallization processes of surface chains of an n-alkane cr ystallite in the vacuum are simulated by molecular dynamics method at 230K far below the melting point. Go-operative inclination of chain axes in a su rface layer is found to cause a loss of a degree of parallel contact with t he neighbors followed by migrations of a chain from the corner.
