R. Vyse et al., Rapid MD and CD weight control utilizing a new wet end weight measurement system - A look at some of the benefits it offers, PULP PAPER, 101(4), 2000, pp. 55-58
Until recently, most machine direction (MD) and cross-direction (CD) contro
l systems have relied on measurements from scanners at the dry end of the p
aper machine. As a result, control is significantly delayed on all machines
. On multi-ply machines, it has not been possible to control the MD or CD w
eight of the individual plies.
This paper reports on a new under-the-wire water weight sensor that allows
rapid determination of MD and CD variation at the wet end of the paper mach
ine. Case studies from mills using this new technology will be presented an
d discussed.
