Abstract
Allozyme data (16 loci) from Mesobuthus gibbosus populations in the eastern Mediterranean region show that the Cyprus population is highly distinct, a lthough morphological differentiation is rather weak. This provides evidenc e for a 'hidden' taxon on Cyprus. This island population is described as a new species.
