The variation of surface tension with temperature and concentration constit
utes a driving mechanism known as Marangoni convection. We study a coupled
thermo- and solutocapillary surface-tension-driven shear flow in an unbound
ed plane layer. The basic flow can be calculated analytically. The stabilit
y of the flow is investigated by a linear analysis. Results are presented f
or binary mixtures with low Prandtl and high Schmidt numbers typical for li
quid metals.
