The authors have analysed nine cases of primary retroperitoneal hydatid cys
ts observed between 1980 and 1995. They emphasise the rarity of this diseas
e. The diagnosis of retroperitoneal location was based on ultrasonography.
Hydatid serology was positive in two cases. Surgical treatment was usually
conservative. Six patients underwent partial cysto-pericystectomy. However,
pericystectomy, which was the most radical method used in the series, coul
d only be performed in three cases. Two patients developed local recurrence
