This paper is the first paper of the author concerning the re-organization and studies of the background materials for Taiwan zooarchaeology. It detai ls and discusses the mammalian faunas and other large vertebrate animals ex isting in Taiwan in different periods of time. According to the nature of t he materials analyzed, the paper can be divided into three parts and a synt hetic discussion.
