The ammonolysis of trichlorosilanes RSiCl3 [R = CH(SiMe3)(2) (1a), Ph (1b),
Et (1c)] leads to a series of condensed products such as six-membered ring
s [(Me3Si)(2)CHSi(OH)NH](3) (2a) and [PhSi(NH2)NH](3) (2b), disilazane [(Me
3Si)(2)CHSi(NH2)(2)](2)NH (3) and the cage compound (EtSi)(6)G(NH)(9) (4).
The mixed Si-N-O compound 2a was obtained when liquid ammonia was not dried
over sodium prior to use. The reaction with sodium gives NaCl instead of N
H4Cl as a by-product which is easily removed by filtration.
